Cork City is the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland and dates back to the 7th centrury. The city developed from a monastery founded by St. Finbarr on the marshland of the River Lee. Corcaigh is the Irish word for marsh land and is also the Irish word for Cork. The river Lee bisects the city and within it there are many pedestrian walkways and hidden alleys surprising the visitor at every turn with their magical mix of modern shops and older more traditional establishments with bow windows and Georgian facades.
